As you approach from the winding fern-lined forest entrance, you will see the Dovecote tower and hear the cooing of the "Royal Doves" that live above the gallery. It is a working dovecote where doves such as Racing Homers, Birmingham Rollers and Egyptian Swifts are bred and sold. You can sit in a loverly garden surrounded by huge cedars and fir trees and watch the boats go by in the harbour and at times enjoy the flying of the doves in all their multi-coloured splendour. Through the ages, watching the doves fly has been a favourite pastime of Kings, Queens and Emperors! The gallery with its beautiful fir floor and cedar timbers milled from trees on the property is a perfect setting for Fine Art.

AMARAH GABRIEL

A Painter’s Journey: Retrospective and Celebration

Garden Dreams series Envision a journey that begins in a child’s mind as she is introduced to the beauty and love of nature and art. It is this journey that Amarah Gabriel began 60 years ago on a stately street in downtown Toronto close to Lake Ontario and continues today at her garden studio overlooking the water on beautiful Salt Spring Island. The colour and form of lush flowers, vegetables and the swift deft strokes of colour on canvas by her beloved Aunt were some of her earliest and treasured memories. Walks by the lake, sunlight dancing on water, the energy, power and mystery of waves elicited deep emotions. Trips to the Art Gallery of Ontario excited a fascination with the art of great artists such as Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Emily Carr and Georgia O’Keefe. She has continued to develop her lifelong passion for colour, light, art and nature throughout her life’s experiences.  Amarah has been an enthusiastic advocate/activist during her career. She helped create Stella Maris Artist Co-operative on Pender Island, an auction and art work for Friends of Clayoquot, animal masks for Salt Spring Women’s Calendar, backdrop and T-shirt design for Vagina Monologue performances in the Gulf Islands and her latest, Art Cards that feature her Apple paintings for SOLID to raise money for orphans in Africa. She has also created two treasured murals, Landmark and SSI Butterfly mural with her partner, Timothy Hume. Join her as she shares some secret memories and artworks created in such diverse places as the Gaspe, Toronto, Colorado, Vancouver, Pender Island and the present Garden Dreams produced on Salt Spring Island. The exhibition will include paintings, 3-dimensionals, drawings, journals, writings, and a video presentation of work in progress. A slide show and talk about some of the concerns that inform her work promises to be an intimate journey into the mind of this extremely creative artist. It's also Amarah's 60th birthday, so come and help her Celebrate!
